This is a very nice presentation by Lenny Zeltser which shows how attackers are using various social engineering techniques in real-life.

Defcon had an interesting contest which was a social engineering Capture the Flag. The social engineering hackathon is an old-fashioned display of con artistry. With nothing more than a phone line and a really good story, a hacker can pry secrets loose.

Very interesting read as to how one had managed to capture all the flags in the competition. Attack was against a Wal-Mart store.

P.S. I think nullcon can also have this type of contest

I guess nullcon has requested for CFE's as well for next year's Goa conference. Do you think we can plan/propose this?

Yes, that is what I thought at first place. But taking permissions and creating a test bed would be a big challenge for nullcon. Frankly, I don't think India is prepared for such type of demonstrations. The companies here not so cool so as too allow such type of attacks. Remember, in that contest the audience was listening to whole conversation.
